Can a surgeon bill both CPT 10005 as well as 88172 if he/she is checking their own specimen to determine if it is adequate or does the 88172 have to be billed by a pathologist only? Thanks in advance.

I believe you need to be a licensed pathologist or cytopathologist to bill the 88172.
