Hi all,
Can someone tell me the reason these codes (ex: 99441 & 99444) are for established patient's or guardian and not for a new patient? I have a doc that is questioning this. He is a Neuro Surgeon and will review records, films, tests.... of patients who are out of state.
Thanks for your help,
Michelle Simmons, CPC

The AMA created the codes that way. I have never read any rationale as to why, but can offer a theory. Perhaps they feel that you need to first see the patient face to face before ethically you can offer treatment in a non face to face manner. It may be possible to go to the AMA website to see if there is any way to pose the question directly to them.

Thank you, I was thinking on those same lines. Just like a PCP will not give a patient a referral to a specialist without seeing the patient first. thanks, :)
Michelle
