If a provider is delivering care to outpatients in an ambulatory setting and also providers care in an inpatient setting as a hospitalists would he/she be able to hold two taxonomy codes? In rural settings we are forced to have providers providing dual roles. We then run into claims denials due to services being rendered by the same provider type on the same date of service. e.g., patient is seen by their internal medicine provider in the clinic and then later the same day admitted to the hospital as an inpatient where they are seen by another "internal medicine provider."
Can the designation of hospitalist only be applied to those providers that are doing a singular role seeing only inpatients?

Thanks for helping with clarification.

Taxonomy would be handled by credentialing. When credentialing the provider with the payer, staff can usually designate whether a provider is serving towards a primary or other specialty at a given location.

However in your case, I think this is an inpatient versus outpatient case. If they're being admitted same day as an outpatient clinic visit, in my experience most payers will bundle the outpatient charges due to the inpatient visit.
