I have a patient who came in the office on 1/25/23 for a suture removal, which was performed by the MA and the Dr. who put the sutures in was on site and advised to not remove all the sutures. The sutures were place by the Dr. on 1/19/23. Can a 99211 be billed for the MA performing the suture removal or no as the sutures were placed in the office and not at an urgent care or ER? Patient came back 1/30/23 and had the remainder of the sutures removed. TIA

You can bill the suture removal with 99211 as long as it did not take place in a global period of the procedure that was performed on 1/19 that involved suture placement. You've haven't said what procedure that was, so I'm not able to answer whether or not the 1/23 visit could be billed.

Sorry about that! Patient was seen for laceration to R ear lobe, repaired with sutures.

When not in global, Don't forget about the new add on codes this year for suture/staple removal.
15853 Removal of sutures or staples not requiring anesthesia (List separately in addition to E/M code)
15854 Removal of sutures and staples not requiring anesthesia (List separately in addition to E/M code)
Notes:
(Use 15853 & 15854 in conjunction with 99202, 99203, 99204, 99205, 99211, 99212, 99213, 99214, 99215, 99281, 99282, 99283, 99284, 99285, 99341, 99342, 99344, 99345, 99347, 99348, 99349, 99350)

In Emergency Department Patient had a Laceration repair with sutures in left index finger. Patient is coming for suture removal to urgent care center and the suture is removed. Can anyone guide whether we can code CPT 15853.

You can bill it if the service was outside of the global period, which would mean that either: 1) this was done more than 10 days after the repair, or 2) your urgent care providers are of a different specialty or different provider group than the that of the provider who performed the repair.
