Looking for advice on suture / staple removal. Is there any payor that will reimburse suture removal by a physician other than the physician that closed the wound? Working in pediatrics I am faced with this dilemma often. I have located a HCPCS code: S0630, that fits this senerio but I am wondering if removal will ALWAYS be included in the OV? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

As long as your doctor was not the one that put the staples in, he should be paid for the service. When the same doctor puts the staples in and removes them, the charge for removal is included in the fee for the staples.

Code the E/M

If you are NOT the physician who placed the sutures you are NOT covered by the global period. You should code the appropriate E/M based on documentation.

There is no code for suture removal UNLESS you take the patient back to the OR for removal under general anesthesia.

Hope that helps.
