My Podiatrist just asked me if there is a code for packing a surgical wound. I have always thought that this is considered part of the surgery. He stated that there is a code that can be billed with the 58 modifier, but I can not locate that code. Any thoughts?

Was this an I&D?

There is no code for surgical packing per se.

BUT ... if you performed an I&D of an abscess and packed the wound that is then considered a "complicated" I&D so you would use 10061 instead of 10060.

Maybe this is what the podiatrist is thinking of?

Hope that helps.

Active Wound Care Management

If the patient is under general anesthesia you can use 15852.

If the patient is being seen in the office with no anesthesia, look at the Active Wound Care Management codes to see if any of them fit the documentation.

If neither of the above fits, then it is just part of the E/M service (or postoperative global package, depending on initial procedure).
