If the amputation was surgical, can we still report the traumatic amputation codes? Example, S98.11A (Complete traumatic amputation of right great toe initial encounter) since there is no code that specifies complete SURGICAL amputation of right great toe initial encounter.

(Coding for wound care so reporting diagnosis of the wounds that we are providing care for is important. We encounter lots and lots of amputations, and we provide care for those wounds.)

No, a wound, amputation or other condition acquired as part of a planned surgery is not a traumatic wound and cannot be classified or reported with a traumatic injury code.

Care of wounds following surgery is a normal part of post-operative care and you don't need specific wound codes for these, unless there are complications to the wound due to a patient's conditions, and those can be reported using the appropriate codes based on documentation.
