Urine swab received for STD screen (trichomonas) - final report reads
- UNSATISFACTORY
COMMENT: The specimen was unsatisfactory for evaluation. The swab needs to be saturated with urine for testing.
Do I still use the V74.5 for the screening even though the specimen was unsatisfactory? If not, what ICD-9 code would i use? I've not had this happen before and I'm kinda stumped.
Thank you in advance.

Yes, this is still a screening exam (unless a diagnostic clinical indication was provided by the ordering provider). Incidentally, V01.6 would still be a screening -- does not indicated presence of disorder. You won't have a diagnosis for the results.

If it is non diagnostic - meaning the pathologist cannot process it or there isn't enough of a sample to process - you always use whatever the dx was (reason was) for the test by the ordering physician. When they do the repeat - you add the 76 modifier.
