Hello,

I have patient that had an arthroscopy on the right knee on 9/3/14. He is in for a follow up for the surgery however, he has a baker's cyst on that knee and the doctor aspirated it. Not sure how to code this?

Do I code the Baker's Cyst with the Aspiration and a modifier 79 and then code the Status post with a 99024?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,
Linda

If the bakers cyst is a new problem then an office level can be charged, appending a -24 modifier indicating new problem in global period. Your aspiration will have the baker cyst diagnosis attached and you would still bill the post op code.

I am interested to see how others answer this question as I work for a large company and usually only see the front end of things. Good luck!

Since it is the same knee, you would code the 99024 (status post) and then the 20610 would need a 58 (because it is the same knee) and the side modifier.
