Hello,
The ICD-10-CM guidelines state, "Superficial injuries such as abrasion or contusion are not coded when associated with more severe injuries of the same site."
If a provider uses diagnosis codes:
(S63. 501A for Unspecified sprain of right wrist, initial encounter) and
(S62. 91XA: Unspecified fracture of right wrist and hand, initial encounter for closed fracture.)
Should I remove the sprain diagnosis code since it's on the same site as the fracture? Guidelines say we should remove superficial injuries such as an abrasion or contusion, but a sprain is an injury of the ligament.
Thank you!
Jen
