The patient came to the ED immediately after getting a splinter from a park bench. The physician's "discharge problem" was "residual foreign body in soft tissue." Should I actually use a residual foreign body dx code for this, or would a superficial injury code be more appropriate? Are residual foreign bodies usually leftovers (sponges, for example) from surgical procedures?

Code injury, superficial, by site. Retained FB is something left in an orifice (such as a sponge, like you mentioned).
