These 'neuroendocrine' diagnoses get me frustrated!

The Final pathology came back with this:

Small Cell Undifferentiated Neuroendocrine carcinoma of primary lung origin

I tend to jump straight the neuroendocrine codes when that word pops up but the physician is treating the patient with a more traditional lung cancer chemo which makes me think that the 'small cell' part of this is what's important. I will be speaking with the physician shortly (I hope!) but was looking to start a little discussion to see what everyone else out there does with these!

Any references would be greatly appreciated!

Neuroendocrine

Yes, the code book is not much help. What did the doctor say?
There is a Note that says Except where otherwise indicated the morphological vavieties of carcinoma in the list below should be codes by side as for Neoplasm malignant. So it may very well be 162.x

I met with the physician and we decided that the neuroendocrine carcinoma code was correct. I have coded as 209.21. I learned a good bit about neuroendocrine tumors in our discussion. It definitely helps to be able to have access to the physicians to get my questions answered.
