I have a patient who is experiencing peripheral neuropathy due to Oxaliplatin. The doctor is stating that it is occurring but there is no intervention needed. Do you code this as a sequela? According to the Chapter Specific Coding Guidelines (C.) for Chapter 19, a. states that sequela is for use for complications or conditions that arise as a direct result of a condition. Since the doctor isn't actively treating it at this time, it can't be an initial or a subsequent encounter. However, if he does start to treat it, then it would get the initial or subsequent codes...yes?

It's all so confusing!

Since this will be a code used in many of my patients with all sorts of adverse effects of chemo, then I just want to get this straight. The other coder in the office never used the same pathway I did in the 3M so she never came up with this problem. She just coded the G620 code. We have sent this information to our auditor, but just wanted to put this out there to see if others have dealt with this issue.

Thanks!
