So I know what I think the answer is, but, I'm looking for some guidance on this. We have a sports med doc who does not do surgeries, and we have two ortho surgeons. We had a patient in the office who saw the sports med doc to go over MRI results, and that turned into you have a tear, and my need surgery. Sports med doc had the patient then see the surgeon in the office for a consult, the same day, within 30 minutes of each other. Now, my question is, do I bill the visit for the surgeon, who is consulting the patient and possibly doing an H&P and setting up a surgery date, OR, do I bill the visit with the sports med guy since he went over the results, and decided she may need the surgery? Thanks for any help you can give!

This comes down to how the ortho docs are credentialed.

I have the same issue in three clinics that I code for. This will come down to how the physicians are credentialed. The two physicians who both saw the patient on the same day can bill separate E/M visits if one of them is credentialed as a specialist. If both docs are using the same tax identification number, then only one can bill.

They are using the same tax ID, and both are credentialed as MD's. So, billing for only one is what I thought the right answer was, since they are under the same tax ID. Thanks for the help!
