We are an outpatient behavioral health facility in Arkansas. I am looking for clarification on an MD seeing a minor child for E/M service without the parent present. I am getting all kinds of information that is very conflicting and unclear. The basic situation is we have an out patient day program for kids. The MD would like to go one day a week and see these kids for medication management review as follow up on established patients. My understanding is the parent would be called if needed. We have always required a parent present on these visits but I am being asked if they could do some of these visits without the parent present. Is there an age limit set? Is this billable without a parent?

Some of that is going to depend on your own state's laws. This publication from AAP summarizes each state's laws. Click on Views and it will take you straight to the table. The last column in the table is for mental health, I had to click on the table and then use the arrows to scroll.
