Wiki Seconday Hypertension

Hi All,

In Emergency room lot of HTN patients come in for Highblood pressure due to not taking their medication for lot of reasons (Ran out of Rx,Forget to take right dosage,age etc.,). Physician final diagnosis is secondary HTN. What is the correct code? (I10 or I15.8 with Z91.1X)

Secondary hypertension needs a documented cause for the hypertension. The note at the I15 category indicates to code also the underlying cause. But you stated that the patient already has HTN, so this is confusing. if the patient ran out of meds the it should be underdosing so you would use the HTN fist and the T code for the drug secondary with an A and the Z91 for the noncompliance. So you need the provider to clarify the note.
