Our CAH is testing all admits including surgery pts for COVID 19 at the time of admit. Is anyone else doing this, and if so are you coding the Z03.818 as the primary dx or the dx of why they are here?

If there is a concern over possible exposure but the test is negative, use Z03.818. Asymptomatic patients who are being screened and have no known exposure and the test results are either negative or unknown use Z11.59. I would think the primary dx is why they are admitted(presuming they are not being admitted for COVID-19 which would then be U07.1) These coding guidelines can be found on CDC website.
