The procedure started as a screening colonoscopy, there was a polyp found and removed in the transverse colon. Path came back as well differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoid tumor. Someone told me that if a screening turns into a malignancy that the V76.51 should not be used. I cannot find articles on the CMS website or anywhere that states this. Does anyone have any links or articles regarding this? Thank you

A screening is always coded as a V code for screening first listed and any finding secondary (if known at the time of coding.) You would never replace the V code for screening with the finding. You can release the claim prior to the path report and would report the V code for the screening and the code for polyp secondary.
