My doctor is doing a screening colonoscopy on a patient who is 45 years old. He is stating that because the patient is an African American the AGA recommends colon screenings starting at 45 years since they are at a higher risk of colon cancer. Most insurance's cover screenings at 50 years or older. Has anyone else come across this and did you get paid by the insurance?

Some insurance plans have a rider on the policy that covers a screening at age 45 for African Americans. Certain United Healthcare and Cigna plans, for instance. But it is policy specific. Your benefit verification staff would have to specifically ask if the policy contains that coverage. Not all do.
