My doctors feel that a patient with Crohn's disease, who is having a colonoscopy, is actually having a screening colonoscopy, for a dx of “Screening for Colon Cancer.” They feel that the patient already has a known diagnosis of Crohn's disease, and the reason for the colonoscopy is to screen the patient for colon cancer, because Crohn's disease can become cancerous. So they think it would be appropriate to bill these patients, with longstanding Crohn's disease, as screening patients because they are only performing the colonoscopy to see if he/she has developed cancer. What do you think?
