If a patient is asked to return for a follow up after being diagnosed with otitis media, and at the follow- up the OM is now resolved, what would be the appropriate ICD-9 code? I have found documentation to support reporting the otitis media code and also documentation to report V67.59. Please help! Thank you!!

Coding clinics put an answer to this many issues ago, for most conditions you would use the V code for follow up. However for an infection it is different. The patient may feel better but only after exam will the provider know if the condition is resolved, unlike say hives which the patient knows is gone upon presenting to the office. Therefore, for infection follow up visits, you use the infection as the reason for the visit. If the provider states the condition has resolved but wishes the patient to return one more time, then the next visit is the V67.59 for follow up.
