Wiki Refund copay if OV was denied due to no auth obtained?

What does the remit show as the patient's liability? If it is $0 and the charge is denied as provider responsibility, then yes you should refund the patient's copay as they have no liability per the insurance company. This is assuming your provider is in-network with the insurance plan.

Agree. And also assuming you were not aware of this ahead of time, informed the patient, and they agreed to the care anyway.
Example - if you are a specialist, and the insurance requires a referral. You remind the patient when scheduling their prior referral is expired. They come in and say "Oh yeah, I forgot to get the referral. But I took the day off work and it's really bothering me and I don't want to reschedule" You have the patient sign they agree to pay $XXX if denied for no referral. In that case, you bill the patient the remainder ($XXX-copay).

Also use this as a learning tool to figure out a way to avoid providing free services in the future.
