So our office provided a vaccine not covered by Medicare and we did get an ABN signed by the patient. However, the coder did not use a modifier and so it was billed without one. So now, my question is: Can we rebill with the modifier so we can bill the patient? Or are we out of luck since it has already been denied by Medicare?

ABN Modifier

Our office did the same thing. When I contacted Medicare they required a copy of the ABN and the medical records along with the corrected billing. I would check with your carrier.

This has happened in the past (Florida Medicare). I will amend the claim with the GA modifier and type in "amended claim modifier" then refile. Sometimes they will request to see the ABN and other times they will send a correct eob back stating that the balance is the patients responsibility. I would make sure that it is notated as an amended claim so its not rejected as a duplicate. Hope that helps.
