When our doctor does procedures with biopsies we have been using 239.0 as the diagnosis code (along with signs/symptoms). I am not sure that this is correct. If it is not, are there any articles that would explain why it is not? Thanks.
if you look in the code book at the 239 category there is a statement that says the term "mass" is not to be coded as a neoplastic process. Mass in quotes means mass or other similar terms. 239 codes are to be used when the provider performs a preliminary diagnostic study and renders a diagnosis of a tumor, or growth. The only time you are required to wait for path before coding the claim is for skin lesion excision, otherwise you can code with the symptoms, or wait for the path report.
