Hi everyone,
Does anyone have experience in billing for the quantitative testing that the laboratory does on urine drug screens? The physicians are ordering a "custom test panel" of 40 different drugs to be run on their patients. I received a report showing 22 units being billed and i guess i just am not understanding where they get 22 out of 40???

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

40 drugs ordered can equal 22 "units" depending on what drugs are being requested.

Examples: Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, MDMA (Ectasy) can be ordered, but can equal only 1 test depending on the methodology of the quantitative confirmation. Or 2 if the MDMA is tested separately.

Or: Buprenorphine/Norbuprenorphine
Fentanyl/Norfentanyl
Meperidine/Normeperidine
Methadone/EDDP
Propoxyphene/Norpropoxyphene
Tapentadol
Tramadol

are all classified as Opiods and can be tested/billed as 1 (again depending on the methodology)

Codeine /Morphine/6-MAM
Oxycodone.Oxymorphone/Noroxycodone
Hydrocodone/Norhydrocodone
Hydromorphone/Norhydromorphone

are all classified as Opiates and can be tested/billed as 1 (again depending on the methodology)

There are others so I would suggest clarifying with your toxicologist on the methods being used for the quantitation.
