Wiki Pt. seen by surgeon in ER

Pt. is not Medicare. Pt. is seen by the ER physician and my surgeon is asked to come and see the patient. My physician wants to admit the patient, however, the patient refused to be admitted at that time, he said he would come back later in the day, he had personal affairs to attend to.

My physician contacts the patient 6hours lates by phone and still he refuses to be admitted.

I know that for Medicare both the ER Dr and my Dr. can charge an Emergency Room code. But if the patient is not Medicare, what does my Dr.(the general surgeon) charge?

Is there something in writing that I clarifys this situation?

Depends on documentation

As always, it depends on the documentation. It is possible that this was a consultation. It might also be an ER visit. Or a new patient visit with POS 23.

I understand if it is a consult that I can charge a consult, but if it is not a consult, how do you determine if you should charge an ER charge versus new pt. charge?
