I bill for Pediatric (Birth to age 3) OT/PT and Speech Therapy. I was asked recently about evaluations that aren't completed during a single session. The problem we have, is most of these kiddos can't make it through a session that is long enough to complete the entire eval. The therapists will finish the eval during the following session. The situation brought up several questions.

1) Which DOS do we use for the eval? The initial date, or the date it was completed?

2) Should I consider billing it on both dates and using mod 53 (discontinued procedure) on the first date, and mod 52 (reduced services) for the second DOS?

3) Obviously, we wouldn't bill 2 complete evals but could we possibly bill for a therapy session on one of the dates and the eval on another?

Any thoughts?

I'd just bill with the initial day and no charge to complete the eval. If you bill with option 2 you may cause 2 copay's to be applied. mod 53 is when patients life is at risk by continuing a procedure.
