Hi,

Looking for some advice. I currently work as a medical biller for a physical therapy clinic. I want to transition to more coding for the practice.

Right now they don’t have a coder, they rely on a cheat sheet of basic diagnosis codes that are used often.

How can I show the clinic that having a dedicated coder on staff is beneficial?

A really good option is to look at the type of denials you getting. If there is a high level of denials due to dx or code issues this would be a good example on how a coder to decrease denials.

Accessing your compliance officer for the site would be another good. They can help express the need for accurate and detailed dx coding from a compliance and audit point of view. Nothing hurts more than an audit were monies are recouped or fines are levied due to incorrect or non-specific codes.

The last examples would be to review your various contracts to see if there is a financial incentive based on diagnosis codes to be more specific. Some contracts allow for a higher fee schedule for specific dx ranges.

Good luck!
