I have a pathologist asking me about documentation for prothrombin time. He states he is being told at the hospital he must convert the prothrombin time into INR using a mathmatical formula. He wants to know if this is just a policy from the hospital or if he MUST do it to be compliant for Medicare.

It is not a requirement by Medicare but it is an industry standard since the 80's. It was originally introduced to create a standard in reporting to factor in the use of different reagents across different laboratories. Hope this helps.
