I have a provider who saw a premature infant at 3 months. During the wellness visit, he added "in addition to the wellness visit, I spent 15 mins counseling and coordinating care with the parents what is to be expected with a child who was born mature. Discussed how they are different than children born at term and things to be mindful for." Provider would like to charge for the additional visit because it was beyond the scope of a normal wellness visit. He also used the dx code P07.31 as the primary diagnosis for the additional visit. Can this code be used?

This dx should be ok. P codes can be used throughout the life of a patient as long as the documentation shows that the condition originated in the perinatal period.
