Question...We have a post op patient that has pins in her hand. She thought she had an infection so we called in a prescription for her. On her way to pick up the prescription she was in a car accident. She called and asked to come in to make sure everything was ok with the pins. Can we bill for that emergency E/M or will that be considered part of the post op period.

note; there was nothing wrong with the pins and no new diagnosis was given.

Plz help!!

The infection was briefly addressed. She has been taking antibiotics since Monday so the note says minimal redness seen.

Since all was well and you had already addressed the potential infection via phone, I would just include that with the routine post op care. If you bill for the visit you may end up with a third party claim to the vehicle insurance of whomever was at fault in the accident and spend months trying to get paid for it.
