I code for a Urologist. He asked me how to bill for an Intraoperative consult. He was asked to scrubb in and look at the patient's bladder to make sure there was no leak in the bladder. He looked and there was no leak. Do I code this as a Consult??Please help.

99499

Without seeing the documentation, the only code I can come up with is 99499 - Unlisted E/M. I would title this "intraoperative consult" and probably use a low level hospital visit in setting the fee.

You will certainly have to attach the notes and possible even appeal.

Good luck

Hope that helps.

consults of any kind are becoming very difficult to bill and alot of insures do not recognize them any more. From the information you gave, he only scrubbed in, viewed the bladder and then unscrubbed. I may be very difficult to meet ALL of the requirements need for the consult. I do not have my E & M info in front of me but I bet there is a much better code to use.

Good Luck
