Hello,

We have a physician assistant in our orthopaedic office, we are trying to find any information regarding an exercise regiment for our patients. Is there a cpt code where we could charge if the PA starts a patient on an exercise regiment other than an office visit? Does anybody know where to find this information?

In order to help you a little more information is needed. Why is the physician starting an exercise regimen?

Does the patient have obesity and is needing to lose weight? 99401 - 99404 preventative, risk factor reduction (time based)

Or does the patient have arthritis and exercise is implemented to strengthen the muscle to improve the a pain? E&M service 99201-99215 code sets
 
Thank you for responding, she is wanting to start the exercise for obese patients. I am not sure if there are certain credentials she needs to have or a curriculum she must follow. Thank you again
 
If the PA is initiating the program and providing risk reduction, which that is what appears to be happening, then the counseling code would be appropriate. These are time based codes, so total time is a requirement. Then document a bit about the details of the discussion with the patient. This can be the only service provided on that Date of Service as these are "Separate Procedure" codes.

Bill under the NPI of the PA unless incident to rules have been met appropriately.
