If you are in network with Cigna Healthcare(commercial insurance) if a Physician Assistant sees a patient should you bill under the Physician Assitant's NPI or is it okay to bill under the supervising physician's NPI?
unless you have a policy in writing from Cigna to the contrary, then you should assume they follow the Medicare policy and definition of incident-to. If the service rendered meets incident - to then you may bill under the physician if it does not then you bill using the PA NPI.
Incident-to basics
* the MD has previously examined the patient for the same diagnosis and has a written plan care for the patient to follow up
* The NP/PA is making no changes to the treatment plan and is not evaluating any additional issues
* this is not a new patient
* the MD you are billing under is present in the office suite area at the time of the encounter.
