I need help with Physical Therapy coding. Can therapy be done on two unrelated problems during the same therapy session without having to discharge one problem first. The patient presented with one problem which was evaluated and treatment plan started, two sessions later the patient presented with a new order for another problem unrelated to the first. We had a similar situation, billed 97002 for a re-evaluation with the G codes for the new problem and were told by CMS we couldn't do that, which seems to contradict what I'm reading elsewhere. If anyone could suggest a good PT coding class I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much.

You can treat two different body parts but you do not report G codes for the new problem unless they are more severe than the first problem. If that is the case, discharge the first case with appropriate G codes, continue to treat and apply the appropriate G codes to the second body part and begin treatment. Confusing for sure!! CMS wants to keep us on out toes; email me privately if you need further assistance.

I just went through this with NGS and this is what the 2 tier specialist advised.
