A patient has surgery as an outpatient, and is admitted for pain to observation statuss. Her PCP (who did not do the surgery) visits the patient, did a short physical exam and recommends she follow up with him in the clinic in a week.

The PCP is wanting to charge an E/M for seeing her. Since he didn't perform the surgery, can he charge for it?

Thanks!

Her PCP should be able to charge for the visit with a 99218 if he was the one who admitted her to observation status for her pain, which would include the exam. If he wasn't the one who admitted her to observation status for her pain, then he could try charging for the visit with either a 99212 or 99213.
