A new patient presented for pap smear, stating that she had had a positive HPV with her last pap. We do not currently have records for the previous pap showing the positive result. Are we able to use the previous positive result based only on patient's statement to justify ordering the HPV test with the current pap? Per patient, the last pap was four years ago.

I appreciate any insight!

Is your patient between 30 - 65 years old? If so the CDC recommendation is as follows:

So your patient should be eligible for a PAP & HPV test sooner than 5 years since they are reporting they previously had a positive HPV test if it was done at the same time as per last pap 4 years ago and she is between 30 - 65 years old. It should be covered as preventive if she has an ACA compliant health plan.

Unfortunately, she is under 30. So she's not eligible yet for a screening.
