I am trying to find out if there is a time limit to bill a patient? In February 2016, the echo was done. By April 2016, the insurance paid the claim. Then October 2017, I received the 1st bill for patient responsibility. Due to an error committed by the person posting the insurance payment, I did not receive the patient responsibility until 20 months later. Is there any information as to how long a physician can hold the claim for patient responsibility?

The time limit for collection of debt is set by state law, and varies depending on which state you're in. If you do an internet search for statutes of limitations on debt for your state, you should be able to find your answer. I don't believe any states have limits of less than 2 years, so I don't think you will be exempted from the provider billing you late in this case.
