Our PA will soon be assisting our MDs as First Start with their surgeries. This is brand new to our practice. Any help or advice on how to code for the PA would be greatly appreciated!!

Make sure they're actually assisting, and not just giving the surgeon an 'atta boy'. They must perform duties throughout the operative session that require the skill of a surgeon. Although a separate note isn't critical, the attending surgeon must show in her/his note why the assistant is needed, what the assistant did, and must name who the assistant is. Use the same CPT code, and the -AS modifier (the modifier -80 is for another MD/DO). Reimbursement is about 16% of the allowable.
