New to OB/GYN billing. -- Can you please tell me how to bill for a preventive visit and pap smear collection. Doctor has CLIA; however, pap is sent out to be processed. Would you bill a 99395 and 88142 OR 99395 and 99000?
You would not use the 88142 as that is the lab code for the slides, you can bill the 99000 however most payer will not pay this code. The collection of the PAP is an inherent part of the exam and as such is not a separately billable issue.
You would use the 99395 only. You could only bill the 88142 IF the outside lab does the processing but you bill for all your labs.
The clinic I was at sent out labs for a long time, paid the lab for the serivce (at a reduced rate) & then billed the patient. After the reconciling process became too overwhelming, the clinic had the lab do processing & bill for the serivce.
