If a patient has surgery out of state but lives in our state so will be here for post operative care, do we charge for office visits? This is confusing! Thank you!

For surgical post op when the surgery is performed by a surgeon in a different office or locale you need a transfer of care from the surgeon indicating that he is transferring post op to your provider and you bill using the surgical code and the 55 modifier

It would not be appropriate to charge for an office visit if the physician only documents post op surgical care. Debra is correct, you bill the procedure code with the -55 modifier. Additionally your date of service must be the date of the surgery, not the date you are seeing the pt.
