Wiki Ortho surgery billing/ice machine

We are doing our first ortho surgeries next week and we have questions about billing the ice machine unit out? Is it a charge that gets lumped into other hospital surgery charges or do you have the patients to pay out of pocket? Do you give the patient an option to use it or not?

If it's in the hospital, it's part of hospital charges.

If it's given to the patient by the physician for use afterwards, it's physician DME. Having said that, it may be not covered as investigational, although you may be able to charge the patient. Here is one policy:
