I am looking for some guidence on coding old MI's. Does anyone know where I can find information on the CMS website concerning Prior MI coding guidelines?
You can find guidelines in the front of the coding book. You can code MI as current up to 8 weeks. Fifth digit one would be for the initial episode of care, meaning if you are treated at one acute facility and get transferred to another acute facility you would still use fifth digit 1. Once you get discharged to skilled nursing facility, you would use 2. If you have another MI within 8 weeks and are admitted to Hospital it would be fifth digit 1 again Once it has been more than 8 weeks, it's just 412. Oh if provider describes MI based on site and depth you code it by depth, for example Non st MI of inferior wall would be coded 410.71. Hope that helps.
