IF THE DOCTOR DOES BIOPSY AND THEN DESTRUCTION OF A LESION BY CAUTERIZATION ON THE SAME SKIN NEOPLASM, DO YOU CODE BOTH OR IS DESTRUCTION OF LESION INCLUDED AS PART OF BIOPSY? HE ALSO DID EXC OF SEBACEOUS CYST.

THIS IS HOW THE DR. WROTE IT ON THE PROCEDURE FORM.

EXC OF SEBACEOUS CYST

SKIN BIOPSY W/CAUTERIZATION X2

706.2

DX -239.2

THIS IS HOW I CODED:

11402
11100 -59
11101
17000
17003

SHOULD I USE MOD ON 17000?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

If the destruction was exactly the same lesion as bx then you may code only the destruction. Also be certain the physician has documtented in the note that this is a neoplasm with uncertain behavior. This is not a code to be used lightly, and is derived via pathology to determine the behavior of the cells, whether benign, malignant or uncertain.
