Would the med infusions, injections and hydration be charged in these scenarios for the Observation period:

1. Patient presents to the ER and then it's decided they need surgery, after which they are put in Observation status.

2. Patient comes in for outpatient procedure, but after the procedure they are put in Observation status.

Thanks in advance!!

Yes, you may code the med infusions, injections and hydration while in Observation Status only. You can't charge for time in the ER (unless you're coding the ER portion) or the OR.

Medicine Adminstration in Observation Status Post Surgical Procedure

Can someone direct me to the rules in reference to charge capture for medication administered to a patient moved to observation after an outpatient surgical procedure? I'm lost as to determining if med is actually part of the normal recovery process and should we bill for meds such as pain meds or normal saline, etc...

observation infusions

does anyone know if a patient comes into ER has IVP, then patient put into observation status and gets another IVP of same med on different date or any other infusions on a different date, do you charge initial or is it considered to be one encounter and you would charge each additional IVP or infusion?
Thank you for the help
