I'm trying to figure out if it's okay to code an observation discharge for one physician when another physician admits the patient as an inpatient.

For instance, the note says (the inpatient physician is not affiliated with the observation physician)-
Impression and Plan:
Unstable angina
Discharge plan

Admit: Time 07/30/13 12:40:00, To Inpatient Unit.

Is admitting doctor in same practice as doctor who discharged from observation?

No. The admitting doctor is from a different practice.

Your doctor should be able to code discharge observation. The admitting doctor will use a modifier to get his claim paid.
