From what I have seen, they are not eliminating the current dx codes, but adding the classes. I would say they could document either way, eg obesity or class 1 obesity, E66.9 vs E68.811; however, the more specific the better, ie encourage to use the class.

Misunderstood your question. Yes the provider must document the type of obesity. Coders can't select based on BMI

If the physician documents the BMI of ..... and states obesity, but not the class, can we select the correct obesity code with the class?

Yes is BMI is listed among the patient's vitals for the date of treatment you can code it.You cannot assume the dx Obesity from just BMI% listed though, provider must list this data.
