My ob's patient delivered when she was away and the covering doctor delivered the baby. What is the "correct" way to bill this? My ob has a special agreement with the covering and wants to bill for the global surgery since she cared for the patient all along. I suggest she bill for antepartum and covering bill for delivery only. Is that correct way to do this?

If your provider has an arrangement with the covering provider to bill the global and pay him/her a flat rate for the delivery only portion, you can bill that way. Otherwise, she can only bill what she did, A/P 59425 or 59426 and then PP care only, CPT 59530. The person catching the baby gets the lyon's share of the money.

Are insurance companies ok with these "arrangements" between doctors? I thought that whatever is on the medical records is how we should be billing?
