In ICD9 OA is broken down by Generalized, Localized (Primary, Secondary).

Looking at ICD10 it is broken down as Primary, Secondary, Post Traumatic.

My questioning is between the Primary and Secondary. Can anyone explain to me the differences?? My doctors don't seem to even agree on the usage.

We are ortho and see a lot of degenerative OA in older patients that come in for joint replacements.

I just did some research on this myself. This answered the question I had because it was not documented whether the OA was primary or secondary in the documentation I was looking at. Per coding clinic 2nd quarter 2003 page 118:

"When degenerative joint disease affects only one site but is not identified as primary or secondary, it is assigned to subcategory 715.3, osteoarthritis, localized, not specified whether primary or secondary. "
