Please help our practice is adding a nurse practioner- State California

Can the NP see a new medicare patient? If yes do you bill using the NP's NPI or the supervising physican NPI? what about an established pt who comes in
for follow up with chronic conditions but also has a new problem not seen by the MD , then who do you bill under.

Any idea's on non Medicare patients I'm very confused about "incident to" rules any help on how you determine who you bill which scenario will be greatly appreciated:eek:

If the NP sees a new patient, evaluates a new problem or changes an existing treatment plan, or sees any patient while the physician is out of the office, must bill under the NP NPI number. This is a Medicare rule but honestly it is most commercial payer rules as well.
